Coalescing Filter Elements

Coalescing filter elements are manufactured with a special filtration media that not only remove solid particulate contamination, but also remove high concentrates of oil and water condensate. Depending on the moisture percentage and dirt load of your air or gas stream, you may be able to fore go separate particulate and coalescing filter housings and just use a coalescing filter.

A “standard” coalescing filter is just like a “standard” car – there are many makes and models available. We typically see coalescing filters with a filtration grade of 99.9% of 0.03 microns. Keep in mind that a human air is anywhere between 40 to 120 microns. Your typical office copy paper thickness is around 100 microns.

We also offer much more efficient coalescing filter elements.  Our high efficiency coalescing filter element can remove condensate as small as 0.01 micron with a nominal rating of 99.9999% of 0.06 micron removal.

How efficient does your coalescing filtration media need to be? It all depends on what type of equipment you are protecting and how much moisture is in your air or gas line. Just like after walking through a parking lot during a rainstorm, the drier you are the better, but you need to have a good understanding of your application to determine the best coalescer filtration media and related costs.

Filter through some of our coalescing filter elements or call us at 800-551-0774 and we’ll walk you through the wilderness to find the best coalescer filter for your filtration application.

Van Air Freedom Single Tower Compressed Air Dryers

Van Air Freedom Compressed Air DryerSingle tower compressed air dryers are very simple beasts which use an absorbent desiccant. Water vapor is removed from the air as it flows through the absorbent desiccant. The deliquescent desiccant slowly absorbs moisture and eventually simply dissolves out the drain valve. Non-toxic, no electricity, no moving parts – the single tower compressed air dryer is the best solution for a wide range of compressed air drying applications.

Van Air is the originator of single tower dryer technology. The Van Air Freedom single tower absorbent desiccant compressed air dryers prevent moisture in pipelines by suppressing the pressure dew point by 20° F or more from the inlet temperature. The Freedom single tower deliquescent desiccant dryers are adaptable to changing conditions and can be installed indoors or out. They are the most versatile and cost-effective air dryers manufactured today.

Van Air single tower compressed air dryers require minimal maintenance, have no moving parts, and are built to last. Carbon Molecular Sieve Desiccant

Carbon Molecular Sieve DesiccantCarbon molecular sieve (CMS) is a sorbent desiccant developed in the 1970s that has no polarity. The primary purpose of carbon molecular sieve desiccant is to separate nitrogen from air. It has the performance to absorb oxygen in the air under changing pressure of normal temperature, so it can gain rich nitrogen gas. Traditional rich nitrogen in plant air is produced to adopt deep freezing method, that is to make air liquefy under low temperature, separate oxygen and nitrogen through rectification. Its most remarkable characteristic is that N2 has little impurity content, N2 concentration and air current can be adjusted according to the requirements, and can gain high purity N2 with less than 5ppm O2 content and lower than -60¡æ dew point through refine.

Drain Valves for Air Compressors & Air Dryers

Drain valves are like an umbrella, if you don’t have one you will get rained on. Now you may not personally get rained on, but the equipment using your compressed air with likely be drowned with water.

Even small commercial air compressors require a drain valve to remove water that has collected in the compressor. Although commercial drain valves are cheap, slow to release and end up failing – they need to be there. There is moisture in air, but when you compress air it could multiply that moisture by like eight times! So the somewhat humid ambient air you felt outside just turned into a tropical rainstorm inside of your air compressor!

Let’s get our umbrella out and cover the most common types of industrial drain valves available for compressed air lines.

Ball Valve Drain ValveBall Drain Valve for Compressed Air

Motorized ball valves are used in many applications including air compressors, compressed air dryers, separators, tanks and even cooling towers. Ball valves can drain basically any fluid. There are two methods two drain condensate:

1. The ball drain valve is controlled by signals from a liquid level sensor.
2. For demand drain applications, a good ball valve will only drain liquid and eliminates the air or gas loss and subsequent loud noise.

Electric Solenoid Drain Valve for Compressed AirElectric Solenoid Drain Valve

Electric drain valves automatically remove condensate from your air system. This saves not only time by eliminating the need to manually drain valves, but also a lot of money because operators typically leave lines partially open to partially remove moisture – and waste expensive compressed air! An important feature to look for when shopping for an electric solenoid drain valve is an integral strainer so the valve itself doesn’t get clogged… not fun.

Pneumatic Drain Valve

Pneumatic Drain Valve for Compressed Air

Like the name implies, pneumatic drain valves require compressed air to operate. But, you’re probably trying to use a drain valve to get the moisture out of your compressed air line, so you’ll be OK. The benefit to a pneumatic drain valve is along the same lines, it requires no electricity! When dealing with remote installations, portable units, or hazardous area classifications – there are major advantages to a pneumatic drain valve.

That’s the 1, 2, 3′s of drain valves for removal of condensate in compressed air lines and gas lines. Drain valves can be used with air compressors, compressed air dryers, air receivers, air dryers, separators, tanks, receivers, drop legs, pipes or any industrial equipment requiring regular condensate removal.

Filtration Media for Solid Particulate Removal

There are thousands of different types of filter element media used today. It is important to make sure the filtration media selected is suitable for your application.

If all you require is to remove solid particulate contamination from an air or gas stream, then you don’t need a high efficiency coalescing filter element or other more expensive filtration media. Note that coalescing filters not only remove condensate, but also solid particulates, but why spend the extra money (and have your filter elements plugged up more often) when you don’t need to?

The typical filtration media used for solid contamination removal is Polyester media which is usually rated for removal of 98% of 10 microns and larger. Other polyester based filtration medias are capable of finer filtration.

Now that we have a better idea of what you want to filter, there are a few other factors that we’ll look at in the future, including temperature rating and chemical compatibility.
